With a population of 212 million Brazil has an estimated 1,1 million people living with HIV (PLHIV) From a peak in 2017 of 70.000 new infections, in 2024 there were /55.000 new HIV infections. The number of AIDS related deaths fell to 12.000 in 2024. Although there is a lack of recent data, older figures indicate the majority of PLHIV are gay men and transgender people. Brazil is getting closer to the UNAIDS target of 95-95-95 every year.
In 2024 90% of the infected people were aware of their status, 80% of them were taking HIV medication, and for 96% of them the medication worked well.
